Open Source AI Gap Map (Website)

The Gap Map maps out the open-source AI stack so people can collectively build what's missing. The current open source AI stack is seriously robust, but fragmented, duplicative, and hard to see as a coherent whole. The Gap Map helps people identify where to build new, where to invest in capability, and where to open up the tools. It is an invitation for greater collaboration and coordination across the space.

Dissecting Apple's Sparse Image Format (ASIF) (8 minute read)

ASIF is a sparse virtual disk format for macOS Tahoe geared toward virtual machines and similar to VMDK, VHDX, and QCOW2 in concept but with its own layout and header structure. The researcher walks through building a parser by generating a test ASIF image, inspecting hexdumps, and reverse engineering DiskImages2's diskimagescontroller binary to recover header fields, directory offsets, and chunk metadata. ASIF uses directory tables of 64‑bit entries, grouping chunk pointers with embedded allocation bitmaps so each table directly mixes mapping and bitmap data, which affects how offsets map to chunks. Finally refines the math for translating a virtual disk offset into table index, chunk index, and flags, then points to a working implementation in dissect.hypervisor for practical parsing and forensic use.

The coin nobody owns (8 minute read)

Simon Taylor argues that OpenUSD is not trying to beat Circle or Tether on existing stablecoin volume, but to unlock the institutional and payments flows that have stayed offchain because of issuer concentration, mint/burn fees, reserve economics, and lack of neutral governance. The piece frames OpenUSD as shared financial infrastructure backed by 140 companies, designed to make stablecoins usable for acquiring settlement, cross-border institutional payments, and capital markets cash settlement where neutrality, interoperability, and velocity matter more than issuer float economics.
