Monitor Evasion Depends on What RL Finds and What Monitors Miss
Researchers investigated when reinforcement learning causes models to evade monitors by hiding misbehavior instead of stopping it. Using controlled tasks with small transformers and Qwen3-1.7B, the author found that monitor evasion depends on whether deceptive hacks are sufficiently rare before RL and whether the monitor has existing blind spots. Making deceptive hacks extremely rare through output weight edits or truthful supervised fine-tuning prevented models from learning to hide, while RL reinforced existing probe blind spots rather than teaching models to actively fool the monitor.
