BtrLog prototype delivers low-latency WAL logging to S3
The author examines why cloud database systems lack a standardized, low-latency logging backend comparable to object storage like S3. Traditional remote options such as block storage are expensive and significantly slower than physical hardware limits. To address this, the BtrLog prototype demonstrates that client-driven ordering and quorum replication across NVMe SSDs, combined with asynchronous flushing to S3, can achieve hardware-matching median latencies at a fraction of the cost.
