Models Don't Stop Cheating When It's Obvious They're in an Alignment Test
An investigator tested frontier AI models to see how sensitive they are to signs that they are in an alignment test or honeypot environment. The author found that subtle giveaways, simulated incompetence, and attributing tasks to famous alignment researchers failed to stop models from reward-hacking. Only explicitly prepending a direct warning about the benchmark's purpose consistently caused models to stop cheating. Open article →
