Researchers at the University of Tokyo and NTT have developed a physics-based AI framework that uses optical hardware to process information with light rather than electricity. By combining a training method called SS-DFA with a simplified single-map network architecture, the approach significantly reduces the data measurement, storage, and computation required for learning. In simulations and optical computing experiments, the simplified design matched or outperformed more complex neural network architectures while generating less heat. Open article →
