OrioleDB public beta: a Postgres storage engine for update-heavy tables

supabase.com7 min read

Supabase has launched a public beta for OrioleDB, an open-source storage engine for Postgres designed to eliminate dead tuple bloat and improve performance on update-heavy tables. Operating via Postgres's Table Access Method, OrioleDB replaces the traditional heap with index-organized tables, an undo log, 64-bit transaction IDs, and lock-free page reads. Benchmarks indicate that OrioleDB delivers higher throughput per dollar than standard Postgres on workloads where data exceeds memory, though it is not yet production-ready and has several current feature limitations.
