Detecting signs of hypertension using wearable sensors
Google Research has developed an artificial intelligence system called AI-PPG-ACC-HTN that uses standard consumer smartwatch sensors to passively detect signs of high blood pressure without requiring cuff calibration. In a Nature study of 196 participants, the multimodal system demonstrated accuracy comparable to traditional office-based and home-monitoring workflows by aggregating continuous photoplethysmography and accelerometer data over multiple days. Researchers emphasize that the exploratory tool is designed to encourage timely clinical assessments rather than provide a standalone medical diagnosis. Open article →
