YouTube is giving its Android navigation bar a Liquid Glass-y makeover (2 minute read)
Google is testing a translucent floating bottom navigation bar in YouTube for Android, replacing the conventional attached navigation area with a design resembling Apple's Liquid Glass aesthetic. The experiment follows other recent navigation changes, including a separate test that removes the Subscriptions tab, and has prompted criticism that Google is borrowing from Apple's design language instead of following Material 3 Expressive. The new appearance appears to be controlled through a limited server-side experiment, with no official way to enable it manually.
ChatGPT can now turn your images into GIFs with its latest update (3 minute read)
OpenAI's Images 2.6 update introduces GIF generation across ChatGPT, Codex, and the API, allowing static illustrations, characters, and product visuals to become short looping animations. Image generation is now up to 50% faster, with improved consistency across edits and two new API models: Flare for speed and Sunburst for higher-quality detail. Developers also gain image markup for targeted edits, SVG export, and controls for how much planning the model performs before generating an image.
Pangram, the Gold Standard for AI Text Checks, Releases Image 1.0 Tool to Sniff Fake Pics and Videos (2 minute read)
Pangram says Image 1.0 detected AI-generated pictures with 99.96% accuracy on its own evaluation set. The detector is available on the web, via API, and as a Chrome extension. Video detection runs on a lighter frame-by-frame model that scores 98.7% on the DF26 benchmark, ahead of TruthScan and Sightengine. Heatmaps show which parts of an image are AI-generated, and images as small as 256×256 pixels can be checked, with lower confidence below 512×512.
AI can generate the interface. What makes it worth caring about? (11 minute read)
AI can generate polished, consistent interfaces, but deciding when an experience should feel playful, surprising, celebratory, or restrained requires understanding the people and situations involved. A confetti animation might be appropriate after someone completes a major personal milestone but distracting when an administrator finishes a routine task for the forty-seventh time. Expressive design should therefore be evaluated for its purpose, context, accessibility, and potential to interrupt users rather than treated as decoration that makes every interaction more engaging.
How Figma Manages Sandboxes at Scale (9 minute read)
Figma's AI products, including its agent and Figma Make, need tens of thousands of sandboxes to run untrusted code safely. Nimbus, an internal platform, provisions, monitors, and routes those sandboxes across cloud providers through one simple API. Warm pools of pre-started sandboxes cut provisioning latency by about 90% and, together with automated provider selection, lifted provisioning availability from 99% to 99.95%.
Fortune Telling and Speculative Design (20 minute read)
Design engineers are particularly well positioned to explore possible futures because they combine visual design, software development, and the ability to build convincing working prototypes. Maggie Appleton's approach at GitHub Next involves collecting weak signals of emerging change, developing theories about where technology is heading, and creating tangible artifacts that make those possibilities easier to evaluate. Rather than trying to predict one inevitable future, speculative design helps teams investigate multiple plausible directions and make better decisions about what to build next.
Win the Demo, Lose the Market: Why Breakthrough Technology Isn't Enough (10 minute read)
Proterra delivered over 1,000 electric buses and grew revenue 24% in 2022, then filed for Chapter 11 the following year. Its buses worked, but below-cost pricing and order-by-order customization undid the business, because technical superiority is not the same as competitive advantage. Five shifts, from listing capabilities to defining consequences and from claims to proof, turn product advantage into enterprise advantage.
Tatiana Egoshina finds beauty in bad typography, Italian folklore and happy accidents (7 minute read)
Milan-based designer Tatiana Egoshina draws inspiration from unexpected everyday details, imperfect typography, and Italian folklore, transforming local stories and accidental discoveries into colorful identities, illustrations, and installations, including an award-winning projection onto the cliffs of southern Italy.
Major design IP reforms announced to tackle copycats, courtroom costs, and SUD protection (6 minute read)
The UK government has announced major reforms to design intellectual property protections aimed at making registration and enforcement fairer and more affordable for independent designers and small studios. Proposed changes would give the Intellectual Property Office stronger powers to reject copied or bad-faith registrations, addressing practices in which competitors register someone else's designs and use them to force legitimate products off online marketplaces. Registered design disputes would also become eligible for the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court's Small Claims Track, allowing creators to pursue claims of up to £10,000 without facing the substantial legal costs of conventional litigation.
