The creative design industry has shifted from a vibrant, creator-led field in the 1980s to a corporatized system where holding companies, weakened design education, austerity, and cost-cutting have devalued creativity and worsened working conditions. Despite this decline, growing dissatisfaction is fueling a new wave of independent, creator-led agencies and a potential renaissance in creative work.

As AI makes design execution fast and accessible to anyone, the real competitive advantage for designers is no longer producing UI, but exercising judgment—understanding context, trade-offs, and user behavior behind design decisions. Strong design judgment, built through deliberate practice and analyzing products at multiple layers (surface, structure, and intent), is what allows designers to use AI effectively and remain valuable.

Accessible design systems dramatically reduce remediation work, but automated checkers alone can't catch every issue. Critical gaps include misused components, unmanaged keyboard focus, color-only status indicators, poor text labels, and illogical heading structures. Real accessibility requires human judgment, disabled user testing, and attention to the full end-user experience beyond component-level concerns.

The gap between academic and professional creative work creates a valuable learning opportunity, as students must shift from designing for grades to creating work that survives real-world commercial pressures.
