The US Supreme Court declined to hear a case challenging whether AI-generated art can receive copyright protection. Computer scientist Stephen Thaler had appealed lower court rulings rejecting his attempt to copyright an AI-created image, with courts holding that "human authorship is a bedrock requirement of copyright." The decision upholds existing guidance that purely AI-generated artwork cannot be copyrighted because it lacks human authorship.
